Day Eight - Prague

Went to Terezin Concentration Camp today,  (8th August)  very emotional and moving tour. It was originally built as a fortress to protect the town and then in 1941, the Nazis used it to house the Jews. They used the camp for proganda to show the Red Cross how well they treated the prisoners, they even made a film showing how happy and well looked after the Jews were. Problem is each one of the people shown in the film all had the same type of eyes, very sad and hopeless looking. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were in the camp, transitioning to one of the other camps like Dachou, Austwich etc. I am sure my spelling of these camps is incorrect - of course does auto correct jump in now? No of course not! Walked in a tunnel that went for 500 metres, just one of the many that are under the camp. Saw the execution grounds, the solitary confinement cells, the dormitories where up to 100 prisoners were kept in rooms that about 50 would be squashed in, appalling conditions, except for that short period of time when the Red Cross came. However you'll just have to excuse my ignorance! Also went to the crematorium and the cemetery where 30,000 Jews were buried in mass graves. Terribly sad. Left the tour early afternoon and was back in Prague. Decided to walk back through old town and head to John Lennon wall, hundreds of people all with the same idea! But it was worth it, then saw John Lennon pub - couldn't talk Gary into stopping for a drink however! Had a great day and headed back to Frank and Belinda's. Frank was in Bucharest and returning this evening. Belinda and I were sitting outside with Hamish when she asked him how much out of 10 he loved Daddy, 10! says Hamish. Belinda - how much out of 10 do you love Trish? 7 says Hamish which I was pretty happy with. Then asks about Gary - he got 10! Then asked what about Mummy and she got a 5! Had a bit of a chuckle but I think Hamish laughed the most! They are such gorgeous boys! We will miss them when we leave. Off to Vienna for the start of our road trip soo bit scared but also excited to be seeing places I never thought I would see!

  2. May I just say that I have not corrected your spelling mistakes! It is very obvious that Pam doesn't get to do a spell check before you publish!

  3. Sorry Trish, a bit late reading the blog, but what were the tunnels used for? Did they lead to the execution grounds? Macabre place, but so important in the history of what we do to each other!!!!
